What’s Happening

Spotify has officially launched Running Mode, a new feature that creates personalized running playlists based on a user's training goals, music preferences, and target running pace. The feature is available to Spotify Premium users on iOS in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden.

Running Mode allows users to customize their workout by selecting factors such as run type (steady, intervals, or pyramid), workout duration, preferred music genres, and target beats per minute (BPM). Spotify then generates a playlist designed to match those preferences while maintaining a consistent rhythm throughout the run.

The feature includes 25 preset running playlists that can be customized further, as well as optional audio coaching prompts that provide encouragement and workout cues without interrupting the music. Running Mode is accessed through Spotify's Fitness Hub.

Running Mode builds on Spotify's existing AI personalization tools, using the company's recommendation technology to create workouts tailored to each individual rather than relying on generic running playlists.

Why It Matters

Running Mode reflects the growing convergence of fitness and music technology, where personalization is becoming just as important as the workout itself.

Instead of searching through playlists before every run, users can generate sessions tailored to their pace, training style, and musical preferences in just a few taps. That removes friction while making workouts more engaging and individualized.

The feature also highlights Spotify's continued investment in AI-powered personalization. Rather than simply recommending songs, the platform is now creating complete workout experiences that adapt to each user's goals and listening habits.

For runners, music has long been recognized as an important performance and motivation tool. Running Mode gives users more control over that experience by combining workout structure with personalized music selection in one feature.

Bigger Picture

Fitness platforms are increasingly integrating AI and personalization to create more immersive training experiences.

Spotify's Running Mode reflects this trend, showing how music streaming services are evolving beyond entertainment to become active tools for training, motivation, and performance.
