A 2016 study found that 3 minutes of rest time in between sets (compared to 1 minute of rest) led to greater muscle growth, especially when it came to heavier compound lifts. While you don’t need such a lengthy rest period in between all exercises (think cable kickbacks, lateral raises, or exercises where you’re not moving a ton of weight), the rest is certainly beneficial when you’re lifting heavier and looking to grow those muscles.
