What's Happening

Barebells has officially launched Soft Candy, marking the company's first move into the traditional candy category after years of building its reputation through protein bars, shakes, and functional snacks. The new lineup includes three flavors: Peach Rings, Watermelon, and Sour Cola.

Unlike Barebells' traditional products, the new candy line is not positioned as a protein snack. Instead, the company is focusing on creating a lower-sugar alternative to classic gummy candies while maintaining the taste and texture consumers expect from traditional confectionery products.

Each 55g bag contains just 1g of sugar, significantly lower than many conventional gummy candy products currently on the market. The flavors are inspired by familiar candy favorites, including peach rings, watermelon slices, and cola bottle gummies.

The launch represents one of Barebells' biggest category expansions since entering the U.S. market. While the brand has become well known for protein bars that taste like candy bars, this is the first time it has launched a product intended to compete directly within the candy aisle.

The candy initially launched in Sweden before expanding into the U.S. market, continuing Barebells' strategy of blending indulgent flavors with more nutrition-conscious formulations.

Why It Matters

This launch reflects the continued growth of the better-for-you candy category, where brands are attempting to deliver traditional candy experiences with reduced sugar content.

For years, Barebells has built its identity around making protein bars that taste more like candy than supplements. Moving directly into candy is a natural extension of that strategy and allows the brand to reach consumers outside of traditional sports nutrition.

The launch also highlights a larger trend across food and beverage where consumers increasingly want indulgent products without the sugar levels typically associated with them. Lower-sugar candy has become one of the fastest-growing segments within confectionery as brands try to balance taste, nostalgia, and changing consumer preferences.

For Barebells specifically, the move creates an entirely new growth opportunity beyond protein products. Rather than competing solely in sports nutrition, the company is now entering the significantly larger mainstream candy category.

The flavor choices are also strategic. Peach Rings, Watermelon, and Sour Cola are among the most recognizable gummy candy profiles, allowing Barebells to introduce something familiar rather than asking consumers to try unfamiliar flavor combinations.

Bigger Picture

The creatine category is rapidly evolving beyond traditional sports nutrition as more brands position the ingredient around cognitive performance, healthy aging, and daily wellness.

The line between functional snacks and traditional confectionery continues to blur as brands increasingly develop lower-sugar alternatives to classic candy products.

Barebells' Soft Candy launch shows how companies that originally built their businesses around sports nutrition are beginning to expand into mainstream snacking categories while still leveraging the better-for-you positioning that helped drive their initial growth.
